What hiring in Dubai is actually like

The paperwork is federal and the same everywhere. Everything else about hiring here is local.

Dubai has the deepest pool of domestic staff in the country and the fastest turnover with it. A candidate who reads well on a Sunday is often placed by Thursday, so the families who hire well here are the ones who open profiles early and call the same day.

Villa communities expect live-in
Arabian Ranches, Emirates Hills, Al Barsha and the Jumeirah villas almost all have a staff room with its own bathroom. Families there hire live-in as a matter of course, and candidates expect it.
Apartment towers change the maths
Marina, JVC, Business Bay and Downtown flats rarely have a maid room. Those households hire live-out or part-time, and the candidate needs her own accommodation, which narrows the pool and raises the rate.
School runs set the hours
Mornings in Dubai are built around the school gate. If your children are at a school on the other side of the creek, say so in the first conversation, because the drive decides whether the hours work at all.
Many languages, one common one
Households here are mixed enough that English does most of the work. Arabic, Tagalog, Hindi and Malayalam all come up, but a candidate who cannot hold a phone call in English will struggle in most Dubai homes.

What families pay in Dubai

Live-in nannies in Dubai are commonly agreed between AED 2,000 and AED 3,500 a month depending on experience, languages and whether driving is part of the job. Live-out and part-time work is usually agreed by the hour and sits higher per hour, because she is covering her own rent.

These are the ranges families and candidates agree between themselves. We do not set them, take a share of them, or charge a placement fee.

Questions families in Dubai ask

Why do good candidates go so quickly in Dubai?
Volume. A well written profile in Dubai is seen by more families in a week than the same profile would be in a quieter emirate. If you find someone who fits, call her that day rather than leaving it to the weekend.
Do I need a maid room to hire live-in?
For a live-in arrangement she needs her own room with a door that locks and her own bathroom where the building allows it. If your flat has neither, hire live-out. A live-in arrangement in a shared space causes problems for both sides.
Can she work across two homes in Dubai?
Only if she is sponsored for it or working through a licensed hourly provider. A worker you sponsor works in your household. Lending her to a relative or a neighbour, paid or not, puts both of you on the wrong side of the rules.
How long does a Dubai visa transfer take?
It varies with the centre and the time of year. A transferable employment visa is faster than a fresh application. Confirm the current timeline with your Tadbeer centre before you promise her a start date.
